Hopenhagen: Now More Than Ever

 on November 17, 2009 at 9:03 pm

Editor's note: This guest post is written by Freya Williams, a senior partner at Ogilvy and Mather.

The Hopenhagen team has spent a lot of time today considering how this
weekend’s news from Singapore impacts the Hopenhagen movement.

Reports in the media are mixed. Early reactions put a negative spin on the world leaders’ decision to scale back their COP15 ambitions from a legally binding agreement to a politically binding one, seeing a failure of global leadership just when we need our leaders most.

Later, commentators found hope in the announcement: it makes expectations more realistic and increases the possibility that COP15 will yield a real outcome, rather than another disappointing stalemate. Plus, it gives the U.S. time to come to the table with serious commitments in 2010 and makes an appearance from Obama more, not less, likely.

We won’t know who's right until the thing plays itself out.

But one thing is abundantly clear: there has never been a greater need for the people of the world to lead their leaders. As they get mired in
process, we need to keep them focused on the big picture. As they scale
back their ambition, we must redouble our efforts and make our hopes for a better world heard.

You are already doing so much. More and more of you are signing the petition. Our Hopenhagen community is growing by the day on Facebook. Today, we launched the search for a Hopenhagen Ambassador with the Huffington Post. We have great things planned for Copenhagen and more communications on the way. But we need to do more.

Here are five ways you can help today:

— Invite five friends to become a citizen and sign the petition (this is the big one)
— Enter the Hopenhagen Ambassador contest, then blog, tweet and generally drum up support for your candidacy. All it takes is a 60-second video.
— Embed a Hopenhagen badge in your blog, newsletter or email sign-off
— Become a Facebook fan and get a passport (if you haven’t already)
— Wear a Hopenhagen t-shirt, take a picture of yourself and send it to us (Flickr details coming soon)

Remember: When people lead, leaders follow. Let’s turn Copenhagen into Hopenhagen.
